Chapter 28

LIAM

I’m normally not the guy to say I told you so.

Not the person to have this urge to shove it in someone else’s face when I’m right.

And yet, today is again a day of another first.

Still, my need to do just that has taken a backseat, as I’m too busy keeping myself from strangling her for being her.

So. Fucking. Stupid.

Yet my emotions are an obstacle.

Insignificant.

Dangerous.

Knowing who’s at risk here, I contain them, focusing on what I do best—protect her stubborn ass. I counter her brainless move by clasping my left hand around her arm while my right hand reaches out for the gun tucked in the back of my pants, pointing it at the foolish man who thinks he can take her away from me. “Let her go.”

Jaden and Mason have taken position on either side of the stranger. He’s completely surrounded, at least three guns set on him while he still has his hand on her arm, similar to my hold.

“Release her,” Mason commands as he shoves his gun deeper into the side of the stranger.

And he lets go.

Yet another demonstration of the persuasiveness of a gun, the reason we carry. And, even if it’s fucking uncomfortable while running, I’d do it again in a heartbeat if it gets her safely in my arms.

Pulling her to my chest, my left arm clasped around her waist, I step back while my gun remains trained on him.

With his hands in the air, he finally decides to reveal his face, hidden by a baseball cap.

The man shocks all of us, including Lauren, who wobbles on her feet.

“Vance,” Matthew clips as he comes to stand next to me.

I haven’t restrained as much emotion in my lifetime as I’ve done this past year. But I’d rather support Lauren than attack him for being a fucked up parent, for making all the wrong decisions, for endangering her.

While Mason and Jaden keep him under shot, I see Max and Bryan arriving—our backup car for today—and I tuck away my gun, so I can use both arms to hold Lauren, keeping her from staggering to the ground.

She lets me, if only for a few seconds, before I feel her gaining strength, before her chest swells as she fights my restraint, her hands going for the man she barely knows, her father who ruined her life.

“You bastard! You killed her!”

I would love to grant her this, let her go so that she can get rid of her anger. It would be more effective than all her therapy sessions. But I have no clue what he’s capable of, and it’s a risk I’m not willing to take.

So, I hug her close to my chest as I take another step back while I whisper her name close to her ear.

Unlike me, her feelings aren’t easily contained; they’re out on full display.

“You took away my sister!”

“Lauren,” he commences, “I’m sorry.”

As he takes a step closer, Jaden and Mason hold him back.

“Shut up!”

“Lauren, let me explain,” he pleads.

Her breathing erratic, she
